My Daughter’s Bedroom Makeover
It’s reveal day! I’ve been participating in the One Room Challenge. After six hard weeks of work, my daughter’s bedroom is finally complete. At the beginning of the year, my 8 year old son and my 6 year old daughter were sharing a room despite having enough bedrooms for each of them to have their own. They loved cuddling at night and chatting with each other as they fell asleep, but a few months ago that all changed. My son decided that he wanted his own room. My daughter grieved the loss of her sleeping buddy. So to cheer her up, I encouraged her to start dreaming about how she would like to decorate her own room. We saved up our money for a few months while she brainstormed ideas.
When we moved into this house 3 years ago, I decorated their room in a gender-neutral style with a white bunk bed and a duvet full of constellations. I was excited to finally decorate a girly girl room.
We are currently 8 months into Covid, and have barely used our guest bedroom. It happens to be the largest bedroom upstairs and next to a hardly used full bathroom. It made total sense to switch her current bedroom with the guest bedroom and get a fresh start. We thought it would be helpful for each of our children to have their own bathrooms as they get older.
We started with a shopping trip to Pottery Barn Outlet where my daughter picked out her new bedding, pillows, and even some coordinating votives. How is she old enough to appreciate a pretty votive? She chose a beautiful lavender comforter and narwhal sheets. Twin sheets were hard to come by in the children’s section of the outlet, so we purchased full-sized sheets and I cut them down to size.
Next we chose wall colors. When you walk in my home, you can see the back wall of her bedroom and the living room at the same time, so of course, they had to coordinate. My living room ceiling is painted a deep indigo called Starless Night by Behr. I love it and have used it as an accent color behind our bookshelves in the living room and as an accent wall in the playroom. I thought it would be gorgeous with her lavender comforter, so we painted one wall Starless Night, and the other 3 walls and trim were painted bright white.
Next, I purchased a bed off of Facebook that desperately needed a facelift. We gave it a coat of bright white paint and now it has a brand new life.
I wanted a piece of art over her bed, but was having a hard time choosing. I saw this tassel garland from Pottery Barn Teen and it inspired me to make my own. 84 tassels later…..I think it turned out great!
While we were switching the bedrooms and moving closets, my daughter discovered these flamingo watercolors that I had painted a few years ago, but never got framed. She thought they would be perfect for her room and I completely agree! The bookshelf was thrifted from Craigslist years ago when I was decorating my son’s nursery. I applied gel stain, and it was good to go.
My daughter requested a swing for her bedroom. What a great idea! I would have died to have a swing in my bedroom as a child. She loves to read, so I chose this swing. I imagine her cuddling up with a good book right next to this window with great natural light.
This dresser was a hand-me-down from my childhood bedroom. I remember looking for bedroom furniture descriptions (no images at the time) with my mother in the Thrifty Nickel newspaper and then going to a stranger’s home to see if we liked it. This set originally had a queen 2 post bed (2 posts had been cut off!), a nightstand, and an armoire. It’s a little worn, but I love it’s shape and color.
It’s time for the final reveal!!!!
