Playroom Makeover

The playroom started out as a boring brown box; so sad and ugly. We had very little storage, so we just lined the toys up on the floor around the perimeter of the room. It was crying out for a splash of color and vertical storage options.

The first thing we did was paint the walls bright white and add an accent wall in a deep indigo called Starless Night by Behr. Next, we got new lighting. Even though this room has 2 windows, it always felt dark with one small light fixture. We hired an electrician to install 4 can lights and replace the dinky light fixture with a much needed fan. This room doubles as an exercise room, so a fan is a necessity in the Texas heat.

The rainbow colored rug from Crate and Barrel Kids was the inspiration for the whole room. I love the life and energy it provides! I chose a red striped fabric that matches the rug to make awnings for the windows. The bookshelves and storage boxes were purchased from Ikea. Vintage books found at a garage sale and stuffed animals from my childhood were used to decorate the upper shelves. The kids instantly fell in love with the egg chair when we saw it at Target. It was a must have! The painting behind the egg chair was a Facebook marketplace find.

Not only is this room used as a playroom, a video game room, and an exercise room, but it is also used as a virtual classroom. We started renovating right before the quarantine for COVID-19. When we realized that our kids would be doing virtual school in the fall, we knew that they needed a dedicated space for their school work so that we could get some work done downstairs.

We created a desk using 2 storage units and a countertop from Ikea. We added pin legs purchased from Amazon. The chairs were procured from Wayfair. I picked up the elephant painting while on a trip to Tanzania. The kids were excited to get their school supplies organized in all of the drawers.
