Baby Girls’ Playroom Makeover

My sister, Kristen, had her 2nd baby girl this past summer. She called me up to see if I would help her transform their dark, home office into a bright and colorful playroom for her baby girls. Of course, I was delighted to help!

The room is covered in rough wood planks on the ceiling and light oak flooring. There is no natural light in this space and only a handful of can lights. The first idea was to paint the walls white in order to brighten the space and make it feel larger. The inspiration for the entire room started with an adorable, striped rug from Crate & Barrel Kids with multi-colored polka dots.

From here, I chose a deep blue to paint the trim, doors and cabinetry. The contrast of the navy blue with the white walls helps to move your eyes around the room. I was so excited when I proposed a striped, pink ceiling in one part of the room, and my sister was all for it! It really makes the room pop and ties the rug and decor together. It’s very important to repeat colors when decorating a room. It makes the room cohesive and thoughtful.

We created a space where the little ones can play on a soft surface, read together, and pretend. The bench, above, acts as adult seating and additional storage for all of their stuffed animals. The chalkboard doubles as a magnetic surface where the children can use magnets to learn their ABCs.

We also created a space that could be used for coloring and painting. I was able to find this cute little table on Facebook Marketplace. It was already painted the perfect shade of turquoise. I thrifted all the frames and painted them colors that coordinated with the polka dots in the rug. My sweet, little nieces can use the bulldog clips to showcase their artwork and easily switch it out as they create more.
